Most backyards just sit there. You mow the grass, maybe plant a few things, and never really use the space. What we love about a sunken courtyard is that it changes that completely - it gives the yard a purpose and pulls you outside.
The idea here was to carve out a lower-level space that feels separate from the rest of the yard. That slight drop in elevation does something interesting - it makes the area feel enclosed and private without actually putting up walls. Add a small waterfall into the mix, and now you have movement and sound working together to create a space that genuinely feels like a getaway.
The planting design was a big part of making this work. Layered plantings with ornamental grasses, flowering shrubs, and low groundcovers give the courtyard that lush, full look without feeling overgrown. The natural stone steps and river rock edging tie everything together and keep it feeling grounded and intentional. Stone columns frame the entry and add a real sense of structure to the whole design.
This is the kind of space where the landscape consultation and design work really shows. Getting the elevation changes right, choosing plants that complement each other through the seasons, and integrating a water feature that fits the scale of the space - those details don't happen by accident. They come from a clear plan and careful installation.
Not every yard needs a pool or an outdoor kitchen to feel special. Sometimes a quiet corner with good design and the sound of running water is exactly enough.
