A lot of homeowners with smaller backyards assume they have to pick one thing - a patio OR a grill station OR some greenery. What we've found is that with the right layout, you don't have to choose. You can have all of it.

Here's what we built into this space: a stone-veneer raised planter wall with built-in lighting, a full barbecue island with storage, a dining area that comfortably seats six, a water feature, and layered plantings specifically chosen to bring in hummingbirds. Each piece was placed intentionally so nothing feels cramped or thrown together.

The patio surface ties it all together. Large-format tile gives the space a clean, open feel - and it makes the whole area feel bigger than it actually is. The stone work on the raised wall and the BBQ island match, which gives everything a cohesive, finished look that feels built-in rather than assembled.

What makes this kind of outdoor living space work long-term is the layering. You've got hard surfaces that are easy to maintain, greenery that adds life without taking over, and a dedicated cooking and gathering zone that makes weekend entertaining genuinely easy. The low-voltage lighting in the planter wall means the space doesn't shut down when the sun goes down.

Small square footage is not a limitation. It's just a design challenge - and honestly, some of our favorite builds have come from yards exactly like this one.
